Note: This is the director's cut of episodes 21 and 22, available on the Season 6 DVD set. Xena and Gabrielle must travel to Japan to save the city of Higuchi. There is a group of samurai that stands in the way. Xena is determined to battle an evil ghost named Yodoshi, but he can only be harmed by the dead. Since Xena must be dead to fight Yodoshi, she allows a samurai and his warriors to kill her. Gabrielle learns that she can bring Xena back to life by burning her body and putting the ashes in a magic spring before sunset on the second day. Gabrielle fights the samurai for Xena's body. She then builds a pyre and collects Xena's ashes. Meanwhile, Xena's spirit comes to a teahouse where other spirits that are against the evil Yodoshi dwell. Eventually Xena defeats Yodoshi and releases the many souls that he has held captive. But, in order for those souls to remain at peace, Xena must stay dead. Gabrielle realizes that she must sacrifice her friend for the greater good. But as she departs, Xena's spirit promises to be with Gabrielle always.

1: Warrior Princess
Xena, a fierce female warlord is determined to take control of the region of Arcadia. She realizes the only way to do this is to kill Hercules, because no army would dare stand up to her if she had the head of the legendary hero. She seduces Iolaus and gets him to join her under the guise of a freedom fighter. She then convinces Iolaus that Hercules does not think Iolaus can handle this by himself and convinces him to fight Hercules to the death.

2: Gauntlet
Xena is back, and her men are losing faith in her after she spares the life of a child when they slaughter a village. Her lieutenant, Darphus, convinces the men to turn on her, and Xena is forced to face the gauntlet, an ancient ritual in which a member of an army is forced to walk through a line of all the men, and if she survives the beating, she is allowed to go. In order to get her men back she decides to kill Hercules and regain their respect but fails and joins Hercules in fighting her men and takes her revenge on Darphus.

3: Unchained Heart
Ares decides to bring Darphus back from the dead and gives him Graegus, his demonic dog. When Hercules and Xena find out about him being alive they set out on a mission to kill him again. Along the way they meet up with Iolaus. Iolaus does not trust Xena because of what she put them through in the past. After finally earning his trust by saving his life, all of them go to hunt down Darphus and kill in a way that will make sure he stays dead.

Belach captures Xenon and wants to trade him for his daughter. Nika, Xena and Gabrielle convince Belach that peace is the best solution.

Since Xena must be dead to fight Yodoshi, she allows a samurai and his warriors to kill her. Gabrielle learns that she can bring Xena back to life by burning her body and putting the ashes in a magic spring before sunset on the second day. Gabrielle fights the samurai for Xena's body. She then builds a pyre and collects Xena's ashes. Meanwhile, Xena's spirit comes to a teahouse where other spirits that are against the evil Yodoshi dwell. Eventually Xena defeats Yodoshi and releases the many souls that he has held captive. But, in order for those souls to remain at peace, Xena must stay dead. Gabrielle realizes that she must sacrifice her friend for the greater good. But as she departs, Xena's spirit promises to be with Gabrielle always.
